Gingerbread Decorating with Kids | Montessori Art

The tradition of making gingerbread houses has been a favorite with my family and kids of all ages at my art workshops for many, many years. But did you know that the tradition of making decorated gingerbread houses dates back all the way to the 1800s? The tradition started in Germany and became popularized by the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel, which was published in 1812. That means that whenever you’re doing gingerbread decorating with kids, you’re participating in a tradition that’s more than 200 years old!

Of course, you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy decorating gingerbread houses—adults really love it too! I started the tradition of decorating gingerbread houses with my kids when they were young teens, and I thought they would lose interest as they got older, but every year they get more excited to outdo their last creation with even more creativity and details! It’s something we all look forward to every December.

Gingerbread Decorating with Kids

The first few years we started decorating gingerbread houses, we actually started with plain graham crackers—not gingerbread!—and icing. They came out so darling! In years after that, we would go “treasure hunting” and local candy stores for new and pretty sweet treats to add to our houses. 

What I love about this holiday tradition is that it’s really an art activity kids can do at home! Art can be presented in so many ways to kids, and this one is always so much fun!

I would always show my kids pictures of other gingerbread creations to look at for ideas, but allowed them the freedom to make their house any way they wanted. It’s important to let your kids just have fun and be creative—there’s no right or wrong way to decorate a gingerbread house. After all, even if their house topples over, it’ll still be a delicious treat to eat!

What You Need:

  • A flat and sturdy surface, like cardboard – you can use boxes from holiday packages or recycle a pizza box; just trim them to size and line them with foil, parchment paper, or wax paper
  • Graham crackers or baked gingerbread (The Food Network has a great gingerbread recipe) or a gingerbread house kit
  • Icing
  • An assortment of candy
  • Wipes and paper towels

Where to Start: A Pre-Made Kit for Gingerbread Decorating with Kids

Of course, I believe making a gingerbread (or graham cracker) house from scratch is a fun challenge for kids, but there are some really great short cuts out there too. So many stores offer gingerbread house kits and they come in all different shapes and sizes—houses, castles, villages, even trains, and a camper! If you go this route and buy a pre-made kit or even a pre-made house, I strongly suggest you find extra treats to add to it. The kits are usually pretty standard, and offering your kids more types of candies and icings to decorate with will allow them to be more creative and have even more fun!

Montessori Kids Holiday Craft | Painting Ornaments

This time of year is a special one. It gets a lot busier, but we also tend to make time for more special moments—even in the Montessori classroom. Kids’ holiday crafts, like painting ornaments, are a wonderful way to let kids work creatively and independently. I’ve painted ornaments with thousands of kids in classrooms and workshops during the holidays and they all love this holiday craft so much! And it’s something students and their families can keep for years to come! I have kids visit me every year to make a new ornament to add to their collection.

What makes this kids holiday craft great is that it’s simple to set up and you don’t need very many special items beyond a basic paint kit. I like using woodcraft ornaments because they’re better for the environment than plastic and safe to have around younger kids (versus glass ornaments). 

Here are some tips for setting up this holiday art activity for your students (or kids at home too!). 

Setting Up an Ornament Painting Station

Painting ornaments can seem like a messy project, but if you set up a special area for painting, it’s actually totally stress and mess-free—and really fun!

The space you set up should be in an area where children are allowed to get a little messy. I suggest using a drop cloth, especially if your students are painting inside. You should also provide smocks, aprons, or large old t-shirts for them to wear, so their clothes don’t get messy while they’re creating—some paints do not easily wash off clothes.

It’s much easier for kids to paint if their materials are at eye level and on a flat and sturdy surface (like a table). You may want to put a drop cloth or old newspaper on top of that too.

Ornament Painting Supplies

Here’s everything you need for this kids holiday craft of painting ornaments:

  • Wooden ornaments – while ‘holiday shapes’ are fun to use, any shape will work
  • Acrylic paint – you will get the best and longest-lasting results if you use acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes – put out a few sizes, including very fine/tiny ones for details
  • Paint palette – any size palette will work for this holiday craft, even a paper plate
  • Glitter – you can use any color you choose, I personally love white glitter for painting ornaments
  • Smock – or another cover-up to protect kids’ clothes; acrylic will not come out of fabric
  • Napkins – for wiping paintbrushes between color changes
  • Jar – water jar to clean paintbrushes between colors
  • Hairdryer (optional) – for older kids or adults to speed up the drying process and work on details

A note on ornaments: You can find unfinished wood craft shapes at your local superstore or craft stores, or you can find them online as well. You can even use glass orb ornaments, I would just be very careful with younger children. It’s also a great idea to recycle old ornaments! Kids will love adding to the designs or completely “destroying” a design to create their own new one.

A note on paint: For this activity, you want to use acrylic paint, because it’s the most durable and it’ll last the longest. (I still have ornaments my kids painted when they were young and I pull them out every year during the holidays!) It’s very important to use kid-safe, non-toxic acrylic paint—you can buy some here.

Where to Start: Choose the Right Ornament Painting Color Palette

I really encourage you to allow children to paint whatever they want—they don’t have to stick with traditional holiday themes. However, more than likely, they will choose symbols of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and other winter holidays. Most of the children I’ve worked with choose to paint shapes like stars, Christmas trees, Santas, and snowmen.

These are some great colors to start with:

  • Red
  • Black
  • White
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Dark Green
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Pink
  • Purple
  • Brown
  • Burgundy deep red

If you don’t have all these colors, that’s okay; students will be able to make beautiful holiday ornaments with just three to four colors too!

Don’t forget, if students are using glitter for their ornaments, make sure they sprinkle it on their ornaments while the paint is still wet. If they wait until their ornament is completely dried, the glitter won’t stick and it’ll just fall off.

Easy Montessori Halloween Crafts for Kids

It’s hard to believe that it’s already October and Halloween is upon us! I love Halloween! I love the creativity that comes with it—the fun costumes, the sweet treats, and the spooky crafts! These easy Montessori Halloween crafts for kids are the perfect way to bring the Halloween season—and a little fun—into your classroom!

If you’re like most of us right now, Halloween snuck up on you. Its a fun busy season for everyone!

Not to worry though! I’ve rounded up some last-minute, super easy Halloween crafts you can put together for you students (or your kids at home) with stuff you likely have around the house already.  

Where to Start: 5 Last-Minute, Easy Montessori Halloween Crafts

Here are some easy Montessori Halloween crafts for kids that you can pull together in just a few minutes!

1. Stamped Halloween Ghosts

If you have paper, a pencil, a pair of scissors, and some paint, you can do this project! Have your students or children draw out a ghost shape on a piece of paper, then cut it out. Place that cut out on top of another piece of paper, then dip the pencil eraser in paint and stamp along the edge of the paper. When you remove the paper, it’ll reveal spooky ghost shapes!

2. Halloween Rock Painting

This is one of my favorite painting projects to do with kids any time of year! You can find rocks outside (or at a craft store), and then all you need is paint and a paintbrush. For Halloween, I like to encourage children to make spooky designs, like ghosts, monsters, jack-o’-lanterns, and even Frankenstein. 3. Toilet Paper Roll Spider Stamp + Craft

You might have to dig through your recycle bin for this one, but the supplies are pretty basic! Start by making four even cuts on each side of a toilet paper roll; and then cut off a square piece on both sides, in between the sets of legs. Fold the ends back and then dip the stamp into black paint and stamp it onto paper. This will give you an outline for a spider that children can then decorate! Once they’re done using the stamps, they can then paint them, add some eyes, and now they have a spooky spider craft too!

4. Pumpkin Painting

Stores are still filled with pumpkins of all sizes, and believe it or not, they make the perfect canvas for painting projects for kids! I love this activity because kids of all ages can do it—you don’t have to worry about little hands and sharp knives like you would for carving pumpkins! 5. Black Bat Silhouettes

This paper bat craft is a great one to do around Halloween. You will be cutting paper, learning how to teach your students about concentric circles and splattering paint. Click here for download and video insturctions

Create a Fun & Organized Art Room Space of your dreams!

For so many people around the world—especially in the U.S.—schools have been looking a little different as of late. Kids are spending more time at home, and parents are scrambling for ways to bring a full classroom experience into their homes. And unfortunately, art is an often overlooked aspect of Montessori education today. If you don’t quite know how to teach art or haven’t had much experience in the subject, setting up a space or lessons for your kids can be overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be though! Here’s your guide to organizing and setting up a Montessori homeschool art room space for your kids this year.

The secret to a beautiful, functional art space is really about giving kids the space and permission to work and create uninterrupted. If you give your children a space to make art, they will do it! 

Before we go into my art room organizing tips, here’s a little perspective: If you don’t have a shelf filled with books, you won’t raise readers; if you don’t have pens, papers, or a dictionary handy, you won’t raise a writer either. So, guess what? When you don’t have an art space filled with art supplies, you won’t raise an artist!

And creating art has a ton of benefits that goes beyond a beautiful finished project; art helps improve kids’ focus, problem-solving skills, stress-management skills, emotional literacy, and hand-eye coordination. That’s why it’s so important to give kids a space to create. 

As an art studio designer, kids’ art teacher, and former homeschool mom (my kids are now grown), I’ve had the opportunity to design many stimulating creative spaces for kids of all ages. I will teach you what you need to know about creating a homeschool art room space for your Montessori students.

Montessori Homeschool Art Room Design

In reality, you can design your art space however you want, however, every Montessori homeschool art room needs to include these six components:

  • Table – all activities should take place on a flat surface
  • Chair – along with a sturdy table, children need a safe place to sit while working
  • Floor covering – this saves your floors from spills!
  • Light source – for children to work with color they need a good source of light
  • Storage – art storage comes in many shapes and sizes, including baskets, jars, plastic bins, shelves, or an art closet
  • Sink – the sink doesn’t need to be in the immediate art space, but should be close and easily accessible, like a bathroom or kitchen; it’s needed to wash materials and hands

Montessori Homeschool Art Room Location 

Because an art space doesn’t need to be elaborate, you can set it up basically anywhere in your home. It can be a dedicated room, corner of your child’s bedroom or family living room, part of your yard or basement, and even in your kitchen.

One of my homeschool-mom friends set up a simple desk for her kids in her kitchen; I loved seeing what her daughter would create when I’d visit for tea! My own kids’ art spaces have transitioned throughout the years to be located in different spots around our home. Now, my daughter, who is 19, likes to draw and paint in her bedroom!

You can keep your art supplies very basic, such as paper, colored pencils, paints, paintbrushes, and clay. But, it’s very important to make sure any art supplies you give your children are non-toxic and kid-safe. Where to Start: Keep Things Exciting—and Organized

The secret to keeping your art space and art supplies organized is only keeping out the materials your child is currently into. If you had every supply out all the time, things could get cluttered and untidy, and your child may actually get bored. 

If you see that your child is drawn to painting, keep those supplies out. They may seem content with whatever activity you put in front of them, but make sure you’re switching things up. Put out papers, pencils, and stencils for a week so your child can explore drawing; the next week put out clay and modeling tools; then put out paintbrushes, different types of paint, and paper.

Art for Mental Health | Montessori Art

Art therapy—a quickly-growing field that combines psychotherapy with visual art—is a brilliant way to help children (and adults) hone their self expression, develop their self esteem, and create healthy coping mechanisms. As you can imagine, the benefits of art for mental health are great and far reaching.

The American Art Therapy Association defines ‘art therapy’ as creative expression that can overcome the limitations of language. This makes it a huge advantage for young children in particular, who have yet to develop the language skills and understanding to really be able to articulate how they’re feeling emotionally and mentally.

In other words, if it’s too difficult or confusing for a child to say aloud or write down, then drawing, painting, sculpting, or crafting can be an outlet for communicating feelings. Many times, emotions that are difficult to say are easier to express through images.

I do want to note that ‘art therapy,’ in its true form, can only be provided by a trained and licensed professional. In this post, my goal is not to give out medical or psychotherapeutic advice, instead, I want to share the ways I’ve seen art—based on my own experience and observations—help children work through their emotional feelings and mental health challenges. Remember, it’s best to follow your schools safety procedures, and report sensitive information to a qualified professional or your admin.

Mental Health Benefits of Art

There are several very general mental health benefits of art. First and foremost, it gives children the chance to process and express their feelings and get into creative flow states. It also allows them to communicate on multiple levels—visually, tactilely, and kinesthetically. Here are a few other ways art can lead to positive mental health experiences.

Opportunities for self-discovery

Creating art in any form can open the floodgates to a child’s emotions and subconscious feelings. As they go through the art making process, they might encounter thoughts, beliefs, or assumptions about themselves or their world, they weren’t aware of before.

Increased self esteem

One reason positive art talk is so important in the classroom and beyond is because it helps build up a child’s self esteem. When a child creates something, they get a feeling of self accomplishment. Being encouraged through the artistic process can help them build up their confidence.

Emotional release

Making art is a healthy outlet for expressing feelings like happiness, sadness, and fear. When a child is unable to express these emotions or thoughts that are swirling in their minds, art can be their release. Without them even realizing, they may work out complex feelings and leave them in their artwork. An emotional release can also bring kids a sense of calm. 

Stress relief

Mental health challenges, like anxiety and depression, can take a physical toll on little ones. It creates acute stress which often has physical repercussions. Using art as a form of stress relief is a healthy way for children to relax—both their minds and bodies. 

Improved mood 

Art making can be an effective way to improve children’s moods. The sensory aspect of creating art is not only calming, but it also stimulates the release of dopamine, which can make a child feel happier. Regular art making can also be used as a coping strategy. 

Where to Start: 3 Art Activities to Boost Mental Health

Art Journaling

Journaling gives students a healthy outlet to express their feelings and work through their emotions. Students can use art journals to document what happened to them that day or week, or artistically express the different feelings or issues they’re experiencing.

Collaging

Collaging can often be centering and provide a calm space for self-discovery. Encourage children to explore their feelings, thoughts, dreams, and goals and express them using magazines. Have them glue the images that they’re drawn to to pieces of paper. You can also give them colored pencils or soft pastels to further personalize their works. 

Tactile Clay Modeling

Clay modeling can relieve stress because touching clay induces stimulating neural inputs from many of our sensory systems. When children start touching and forming, the actions are considered active learning. The electrical activity stimulated in their brain becomes a different type of action, firing connections and allowing children to focus on their handiwork only. Start with simple clay modeling exercises, and experiment with the many types of clay available for children, such as non-harden, air dry, and pottery clay.

Understanding the Importance of Color in Art & Science

Color theory is a foundational area of visual arts studies. Understanding color and color theory is essential to developing art skills. All artists must learn how different colors complement each other; part of this means understanding the principles of the color wheel and creating mixtures of color values and intensities of different hues.

Beyond being an important part of art, color also plays a significant role in science! Did you know that Sir Isaac Newton not only discovered gravity, but he also observed how light bends as it passes through the prism—which was the first step in giving us what we now know as “ROY G BIV!” So, teaching kids about color is both artistically and scientifically important.

Using Kids Nature Journals to Teach Montessori Color Lessons

Color theory lessons can be easily integrated into nature journaling. Nature journals offer kids the opportunity to investigate and observe color while recording their nature and outdoor observations.

When they’re completing their nature journals, have students describe the colors they observe with written words, and also by choosing specific color mediums (such as crayons, colored pencils, and/or paint) to represent the objects they see. For instance, they might doodle leaves, tree bark, ponds, or the atmosphere, and then assign these observation notes with descriptive color words.

Examples:

  • “The tree had small, bright green leaves growing.” 
  • “The bark on the tree had a cool feeling and looked dark brown.”
  • “A bird with reddish feathers flew by.”

Where to Start: Simple Nature Journal Color Prompts

It can be overwhelming to think about taking your class outside for an art lesson. Maybe the idea of rounding up your students and keeping them focused on lessons outside the classroom—when all they want to do is climb a tree or jump on fallen leaves—stresses you out. I get it and I’ve been there! Kids have minds of their own and once they’re outdoors, their playful instincts tend to take over. However, getting them to focus on Montessori color lessons can be done. 

Keeping young students’ attention comes down to giving them something specific to focus on while they’re outside. Color can be found in outdoor environments in all different shades, hues, and tones:

  • The colors of a rainbow (ROY G BIV)
  • The natural pigments found in flowers and minerals
  • The iridescent colors of a butterfly wing
  • The color differences in males and females of a species
  • The green tones in different types of tree leaves

Color even plays a role in the survival of particular organisms in certain biomes! There are amazing teaching opportunities to point out how color is represented in the natural environment and different ecosystems. These kinds of observations can lead to fun and insightful scientific discussions in your classroom! Observing nature and recording natural color values are great ways to integrate science and art.

Montessori Art: Mandala Activity for Stress Relief

Mandalas are a geometric design pattern that offer several mental and emotional benefits. Mandala, which means “circle” in Sanskrit, is a sacred symbol that is used for meditation, prayer, healing, relaxation, and art therapy for both adults and children—especially when used in a Montessori art mandala activity.

In Hindu and Buddhist cultures, the circular design of mandalas represents the idea that everything in life is connected and the infiniteness of the universe.  Mandalas can also symbolize a personal spiritual journey for each individual viewer.

While there are several types of mandalas, the three most common are: the teaching, healing, and sand mandalas.

  • Each shape, line, and color in a teaching mandala represents different aspects of Buddhism. Monks learn to create these mandalas during their monastic education.
  • A healing mandala is an intuitive design made for the purposes of meditation, focus, and concentration.
  • Sand mandalas are unique in that both their creation and destruction have symbolic meanings. Multi-colored sand is placed in concentric circles, working from the outer part of the design to the center.

Many clinical studies have shown that mandalas can be used to boost the immune system, reduce stress, ease depression, alleviate pain, lower blood pressure and promote healthy sleep.

Designing and coloring mandalas can help your students (or you) focus their attention. That’s why they’re a great exercise for helping kids calm down when they’re stressed. Here are some other benefits of mandalas:

  • They create a feeling of balance
  • They bring peace and tranquility
  • They strengthen fine-motor skills through repetitive movement
  • Looking at them produces a sense of calmness
  • They help with focus and concentration
  • They encourage mindfulness
  • They calm the nervous system
  • Working on them opens pathways to allow creativity to flow
  • The different color schemes in mandalas can be therapeutic

Mandalas have been recognized by psychology as a therapy tool. The Swiss psychologist Carl Jung believed that mandalas are representations of our minds and that we project our thoughts and feelings onto how we perceive and interpret mandals. And different branches of psychology recognize different benefits of mandalas; for example, transpersonal psychology uses mandalas as an exercise for connections and behavioral psychology uses them to improve memory, attention, and coordination.

The intricate design of mandalas can be intimidating, but children don’t need to be artists to reap the many benefits of mandalas.

Where to Start: Montessori Art Mandala Coloring Activity

Your students can use natural or found objects to make their own mandalas—which doesn’t require any drawing at all. Or, you can download a blank mandala (or purchase a mandala coloring book—there are plenty for sale online) and have your students color them. You can also use Montessori insets to create simple mandala designs to color. 

Making the conscious effort to embrace mandalas and to introduce Montessori art mandala activities in your classroom are the first steps to helping your students feel calmer, more mindful, and less stressed.

Montessori Art Direct and Indirect Aims

If you don’t come from an art background or haven’t had any art training, then introducing art lessons to your students might feel like unfamiliar territory. What makes it worse, is that there are no real guidelines or proper art literacy standards available in traditional Montessori training. I know how frustrating it can be to take something so foreign and bring it into your classroom with confidence. The secret is using Montessori concepts to merge the two together. Here’s how to create your own, effective Montessori art direct and indirect aims.

I’ve worked with Montessori teachers and in Montessori classrooms all over the world, and I also have a background in all types of visual art. It took years of observation and teaching art directly to students, but I’ve figured out a way for you—even if you have no art experience—to support art literacy in your Montessori classroom.

I’m sure you know how important it is to support students in their own self discovery using their hands and senses within the classroom environment. This exploration process is similar to how artists discover and create with their own hands too. Our hands are the neural connection that feeds our brain information; they’re also the way we develop and hone our fine-motor skills

So, as a Montessori teacher, how can you support students in the artistic process and inspire them to think creatively? Start with understanding how direct and indirect aims relate to artistic development and progression.

For an artist to create, they must move through the artistic process, which is the four actions an artist experiences while creating and producing artworks. It starts with self discovery through their hands, then designing with their imaginations, then constructing with materials, and finally, reflecting about their process through expression by using art language, creative writing, or community sharing.

Where to Start: Using Montessori Art Direct and Indirect Aims

So let’s compare these actions to Montessori’s method of direct and indirect aims to teaching as a guide.

Art Lesson: Direct Aims

In an artistic environment, your Montessori art direct aim can be to prepare the work space, explore different artist materials, and manage time for art creation—while following art standards. You can also demonstrate and isolate techniques that promote independent exploration, engagement, and how to work in a respectful, artful way within the classroom.

The Artistic Process: Indirect Aims

Indirect aims are accomplished by stepping back and allowing the artistic process’s four actions to unfold. Self discovery by sensory tactile spatial exploration with the eyes, hands and mind; improvisation and creative selection of the elements and principles of design; the hands-on construction of ideas; and finally, the opportunity to reflect on the process verbally or through writing. Indirect aims unfold during the artistic process. Creativity is the result of the process.

Making Art Stimulates Kids’ Brain Development

I talk to so many adults and teachers who think art is just a frivolous subject, an activity to give kids to do to keep them quiet for an hour or so. Some might even know the value of art in that it encourages kids to think creatively and and work through complex emotions. Art benefits both their mental health and their fine motor skills too, but did you know art making stimulates kids’ brain development!? It goes beyond creative expression (although that’s important too) and actually has lasting positive effects on kids’ brains!

You may think that the art projects and lessons you’ve been doing in your Montessori classroom is just busy work—filling time and keeping kids busy, but there is a lot of behind-the-scenes action going on during each art activity that fuels students’ brain development. We know that when a child touches an object, information is sent through their sensory nerves to their brains.  Visual art learning often happens through direct sensory interactions which stimulates learning in different ways than visual and audio learning. 

These sensory experiences can help young students learn more, better understand different ideas and concepts, and art making stimulates kids’ brain development. Here are a few areas where art directly benefits kids’ brain development.

Gross Fine-Motor Skills

Visual arts provides kids with the opportunity to use their hands on a regular basis—holding pencils, pinching and sculpting clay, cutting with scissors, and making fluid brushstrokes all help kids build their hand muscles and strengthen their hand-eye coordination as well as fine motor movements

Connection to Vocabulary and Communication

Visual arts help kids make connections across different subjects and ideas to be able to better understand things. So when kids explore different art activities, they’re actually learning how to communicate what they see in their artworks and how to describe the artistic process they use to create. In doing this, they unknowingly start making observations such as, “I see color,” “I see pink,” “I see a squiggly line,” “I see zigzags.” When they communicate those observations to you or each other, they begin to develop their art language and a greater vocabulary, which is a part of cognitive processing.

Stress Regulation

Creating art also helps children wire their brains to regulate stress. Art gives them the tools to learn how to calm themselves down. Tactile cognitive processing occurs when children create art; the neural networks in their brains fire up and signal their brain to focus solely on what they’re doing with their hands, blocking out outside thoughts and stimuli. What happens is, if kids are stressed out or upset about something and they’re making art, they can’t focus on that. Art involves active learning, meaning they have to focus on what they’re doing immediately, which takes away the upsetting, stressful things that are happening in their environment.

Implicit Memory

Another area of brain development art fuels is Implicit memory. When kids learn repeated movements, they’re strengthening their Implicit memory and are actually storing this new information. The next time that they go about making an art, their Implicit memory kicks in and their hand movements will come naturally—the actions are wired into their memories. That means they don’t have to consciously think about every minute action; they will see a paintbrush, and instinctively know to pick it up, dip it into the palette or water, and start creating. The sensory information of seeing the paintbrush and then holding it in their hand immediately sends that information to their brain, triggering an action. Building this Implicit memory helps develop more skills down the road; they’ll have this Implicit memory already stored in their brains and can then focus on the next steps or deeper ideas.

Spatial Intelligence

Spatial intelligence is learned through creating with forms in space. When children make art, they become aware of the spatial relationships among objects in the realm of their own experiences. This gives them the ability to visualize and manipulate elements, rotate objects, and distinguish depth and balance—which is critical in early childhood brain development. It’s important to note that spatial intelligence is something that cannot be taught unless kids are actually doing an activity; art gives them the experience of seeing how things interact and happen dynamically or statically. 

Where to Start: Lesson Plans to Ensure Art Stimulates Kids’ Brain Development

Here’s some great news: students will automatically start getting all these benefits any time they create art! That means you don’t have to have any fancy art mediums or materials or complicated lesson plans. You can do simple activities to make sure art stimulates kids’ brain development. The more art lessons and activities you plan for your Montessori students, the more they’ll deepen their neural networks and build on all these developmental skills. Any art lesson, especially those that involve process-based or exploratory learning, will benefit kids’ brain development.

I’ve spent years observing how young students learn art, and in my experience I’ve seen how sensory art projects and art-making actions can help students achieve better control of their fine motor skills. In fact, I encourage you to look for Montessori fine motor art activities to do with your students in your classroom.

It’s important to understand how fine motor development plays a role in a child’s daily life, both inside and outside of school. They give kids the strength to press, push, pull, and squeeze so they can learn and be able to dress themselves, tie their own shoes, eat without assistance, and play outdoors safely. In the classroom, this translates to holding a pencil to write, using scissors safely, handling papers, opening lunch and supply boxes, and using art supplies (like glue) without a mess.

Increasingly, over the years, early childhood students are coming to my classes and workshops with very little, or even no, finger or hand-strength capabilities. Many Montessori teachers have shared with me that students entering their classrooms also seem to lack the capabilities of completing simple tasks that rely on fine motor skills.

Because these basic skills are lacking, it’s slowing down student progression in the classrooms and some teachers worry that students aren’t able to participate in independent art activities. Not only does that limit a student’s ability to learn and develop their art literacy, it increases the chance of mess or injury in the classroom—and both are major problems.

These issues can be remedied, on a large scale, if you give children the opportunities to make art. In fact, not providing kids with enough chances to do repetitive movements, especially in the lower grades, can delay their confidence to work independently and successfully progress within the school year. Make sure you’re designating plenty of time for your students to work on implicit memory functions—which means performing certain tasks without conscious awareness, while building strength.

Where to Start: Sensory Activities to Build Fine Motor Skills

Typically, when I teach my own classes or go into Montessori classrooms, I start my students out with clay modeling, paint brush stroking, sensory painting, and safety scissor activities. I’ve found that these types of activities, plus many others, can help students develop their skills quickly over a short period of time.

You want to start your students out with very basic one- to two-step isolated movements. For instance, I’ll often introduce clay to a classroom and then we’ll work on kneading the clay and forming it into a sphere. After that, I’ll give them time to just sculpt simple creatures, botanicals, or anything else they desire—but only working with simple movements. Same thing with painting—I’ll teach kids one isolated movement like dipping a paintbrush into a palette then making a smooth brush stroke. I’ll give kids time for these movements over and over so that they build implicit memory and concentrate on that one moment.
