5 Simple Tips for Packing and Resetting
By Spramani Elaun
Why End-of-Year Art Organization Matters
As the year comes to a close, itโs tempting to quickly box up art supplies and move on to summer plans. Taking a little extra time to pack thoughtfully, however, can make a huge difference when youโre ready to create again. A well-organized art space saves time, reduces stress, and supports creativity from day one.
After many years of working with childrenโs art in a wide range of settings, Iโve learned that organization is not about perfection. Itโs about intention and ease.

Tip 1: Identify the Supplies You Use Most
Before packing anything away, take a moment to reflect on what was actually used throughout the year. Looking back at completed projects can help you identify which materials supported the most meaningful creative experiences.
Creating a simple list of frequently used supplies gives you clarity. It also helps you avoid overbuying and ensures that the materials you rely on most are easy to access when you return.

Tip 2: Organize While You Pack
Packing is the perfect time to organize. Grouping supplies by how they are used makes future setup faster and more enjoyable. When materials are stored with intention, it becomes easier to create without feeling overwhelmed.
For example, keeping all painting materials together means youโre always ready when inspiration strikes. Thoughtful grouping supports smoother creative flow later on.

Tip 3: Use Clear, Reusable Containers
Clear containers make organization simple. Being able to see what you have without opening every box saves time and frustration. Reusable bags and bins also help keep smaller items contained and visible.
This approach makes it easy to check supplies at a glance and quickly know whatโs available.

Tip 4: Let Go of Unused Materials
End-of-year packing is a great opportunity to release supplies that no longer serve you. If certain items were rarely used or tied to projects that never happened, itโs okay to let them go.
Donating usable materials can be a generous option. Reducing clutter creates more space, both physically and mentally, for fresh ideas next year.

Tip 5: Create a Simple Art Record
Instead of storing piles of finished artwork, consider creating a digital or printed record. Photographing completed pieces allows you to preserve memories, reflect on what worked well, and free up storage space.
You can add notes to photos if youโd like to remember why certain projects felt successful. This approach keeps inspiration alive without accumulating clutter.
A Thoughtful Reset for the Next Creative Season
Organizing art supplies at the end of the year is a gift to your future self. When materials are packed with care, returning to creativity feels welcoming instead of overwhelming.
A little intention now can make the next season of art feel calm, joyful, and ready to unfold.
