Botanical Art Observation Study
Introduce Georgia O’Keeffe to your students, one lesson at a time.
10 sequential art lessons that help children observe flowers closely, then create them. Drawing is the foundation, with painting, pastels and crafting along the way. Your students meet the artist through guided art projects, and every lesson builds on the last.
Built on the Science Art Method™. Best for ages 7 and up, in elementary and middle school.
Sound familiar?
Your students are ready for more. You’re not sure what comes next.
They know the basics
Your students can draw lines and shapes. Now you need lessons that ask more of them.
One-off artist projects
You show a famous painting, make one project, and move on. When the activity is over, the learning often stops there.
Hours of research
Planning a real artist study takes hours you don’t have.
One-off projects are not the same thing as art literacy.
Why I created this curriculum
Children don’t need to copy O’Keeffe. They need to learn how she saw.
I saw so many teachers sharing famous artwork and having children copy it. I felt these lessons were missing the mark.
Copying a painting doesn’t show children how an artist built their skill, or what made them unique.
This summer I traveled to New Mexico and visited the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. I expected to see nothing but close-up flower paintings. Instead, I found her process and her life story. O’Keeffe noticed that people didn’t look closely, so she made her flowers big and close up. I knew this is what children need to learn, not to copy her, but to look the way she looked.
Most teachers don’t have the luxury and time to study an artist this deeply, and teacher training rarely focuses on fine arts and art literacy. So I made the lessons for you: real art lessons, designed by a real art teacher, in an order that builds.
What your students learn
Meet the artist. Observe like an artist. Create like one.
Georgia O’Keeffe is the featured artist throughout. Each lesson is inspired by her art and teaches the elements and principles of design.
Most lessons build drawing skills, the foundation of everything your students create. Painting, pastels and crafting lessons let them take those skills further.
Your students explore botanical subjects through drawing, painting, pastels, printmaking, and dimensional art. Along the way, they strengthen observation skills, discover visual art concepts, and develop their own creative ideas. Sample projects include flower petal studies, pastel seashells, and botanical booklets. The curriculum provides the complete lesson sequence and teaching guidance.

Who it’s for
The next step after the Drawing Curriculum.
This curriculum works as an extension to my Drawing Curriculum. It’s for teachers who want more advanced lessons and want to teach the elements and principles of design.
Best for children ages 7 and up, in elementary and middle school. Students need to know how to draw basic lines and shapes to be successful.
Some lessons use specialty materials, such as pastels, charcoal and styrofoam, which are listed in each lesson’s materials list.
“Teachers are fully capable of creating beautiful art pieces with the right road map.“Spramani Elaun
Your guide
“I’ve taught over 200,000 children, and I still start every lesson the same way: one step at a time.”
Spramani Elaun is a former commercial graphic designer and illustrator who has spent 30 years in art education: 10 years running her homeschool art studio, 10 years teaching art in Montessori schools, and 10 years training Montessori educators around the world.
You don’t need to be artistic. You don’t need to do it perfectly. And you don’t need to figure this out alone.
The Science Art Method™
Founded on 30 years in the studio.
The Science Art Method™ is the framework underneath this curriculum. It comes from 30 years of teaching children in real studios, observing closely, and recording what actually happens as a child learns to make art.
Children build visual art literacy through direct experience with real materials, introduced in the order their eyes and hands are ready to receive it. That order is the difference between a child copying a picture and a child learning to see.
The Science Art Method™ is the original work of Spramani Elaun and belongs to Nature of Art®.
